Understanding the Components

Japanese wind chimes, known as furin, are intricate and beautiful objects that have graced Japanese homes for centuries. They typically consist of three main parts:

1. Gaiken (The Bell or Bowl)

The gaiken is the bell- or bowl-shaped exterior of the wind chime. It is typically made of glass, metal, or ceramic and is responsible for creating the chime's sound.

2. Zetsu (The Bell Clapper)

The zetsu is the clapper inside the gaiken. It is usually made of metal or wood and strikes the gaiken to produce the chime's sound.

3. Ito (The Cord)

The ito is the cord that suspends the wind chime. It is usually made of silk or nylon and is typically tied to a hook or branch.
